PMC-review is back

headache

Wow.  What a fucking headache that was.  It has been a week since I was able to log-in to my account and make any posts.  I apologize for being AWAL.  Believe me, I was in a panic!  So last Monday’s Scavenger Hunt was a no show, but I will double up the clues for you this week, so you can still enter.  Thanks to everyone who supported me while I was down (my site) and I was freaking OUT!

What happened?  Well, since I have had my blog I have been experiencing sporadic 500 internal server errors.  I contacted my provider (Netfirms) several times and we seemed to iron the problem out.  Then it started once again, and I thought, “This is enough!”  So I impulsively switched domain hosting over to GoDaddy (the worst mistake I’ve ever made!) and figured all my hosting problems would magically disappear.

Obviously, that didn’t happen.  What happened instead, is that while GoDaddy says you have this and that with your hosting plan, you have to go in and install everything yourself.  Even if you are a tech-less wonder like me.  So I tried this and tried that, imported, exported, pulled my hair out, got indigestion which lead to acid reflex and bad nightmares, and still my site would not go up.  I tried building it again from scratch, but that too proved impossible as all my perma-links were BROKEN, and I didn’t know how to fix them.  Also, my wordpress was not making the connection to my MySQL.  If you don’t know what that is, neither did I til last week.  But, you need it to run your wordpress program.

Finally, I figured the only way to get my site back was to go back to my original Netfirms hosting (luckily all my files, MySQL & WordPress were still there as I have several domains with them…)  So, I changed my nameservers back and Voila! PopMyCherryReview.com came back to life.  I sighed a big sigh thinking it was over.

Not so.  I then started having those nasty 500 internal errors once again. WTF!  Luckily, Netfirms has an excellent customer support team and get back to you and also help you to resolve issues, unlike GoDaddy who seem to be a bunch of clueless A**Holes (no offensive to anyone that works there, I know its not their fault, but GoDaddys.)…  So, Netfirms found out I was having two problems.  First was a traffic issue.  I was sometimes getting over 7000 hits a day and one day peaked at over 10,000.  Like Wow!  Then, one or a few of my plug-ins were causing wordpress to time out my MySql.  So, I’ve removed the plug-ins I think were causing the problems and upgraded my account.

So now I’m back.  Yeah!!!! Happy dance!!!  Hopefully no more 500 errors and techy problems in the future.  This was truly an experience I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy… Not that I have any enemies, except maybe GoDaddy.  If you are thinking of using them for hosting, be forewarned.  They may be cheaper, but you get what you pay for.

To all my readers in the US.  Happy Thanksgiving.  I have a lot to be thankful for today (thanks Netfirms!) and thanks to all of your for your support.  I hope you find much to be thankful for and wish you all the best!

xxx

I’m not surprised. GoDaddy makes me sick based on its commercials alone. I have vowed never to go near them with a 10 ft pole.

GoDaddy works great for a lot of people but I cannot imagine how difficult/scary it must have been to go through all this when you’re not familiar with the inner workings of WP. If you ever have specific WP questions, please feel free to ask! I’ve been doing it manually for so long that it actually makes me nervous to use installation clients. LOL

I wonder if there are any WP Plugins which can help to monitor the DB usage/tolls. I may go look that up.

Thanks Adriana! Yeah, I had heard good things about GoDaddy when I switched, but quickly learned that they didn’t have good customer service. The people don’t seem to even bother reading your email, and just send you a help message that directs you to the pages that were useless to begin with. I’ve never had problems with WordPress before them. 🙂
